Yes, there are rules

I'm not sure why, but spammers love to comment on my blog. Luckily, I receive a text notification of every comment posted on my blog posts. I have an app on my phone that allows me to manage comments, and that means that I can delete them almost as soon as they are posted. They are easy to spot. Usually the comment is short, generic, and includes a link to something related to designer watches. (that crowd LOVES me)
I've seen discussion lately around blog "rules". Common consensus seems to be you are the king of your own castle, and so therefore you get to make whatever rules you think are appropriate around engagement. You could turn off comments altogether. You may decide to delete comments from "haters". You may respond to every comment, or just a few. You can direct people who want to connect with you offline, and let them know when you'll respond if they chose that route. The list goes on and on.
That got me thinking about my rules. I do have a few. Anything that smells even remotely fishy and spam-like gets deleted immediately. Another rule is that if you do favor me with a few minutes of your time to provide a real comment, I'll respond back. Beyond that I'm pretty much playing it by ear. I figure that my audience with ultimately show me the level and kinds of engagement that you want. It's up to me to listen.
But at some point, it is important to think about the rules. As your business grows, and there are more people vying for your attention, rules of engagement provide the baseline and set expectations up front. This is something that I'll definitely be thinking about and refining as the blog grows.
Do you have any rules? If so, which ones work the best?
